Busting Myths: No Age Limit to Start a Home Bakery

Whether you're young, old, or in between, success can be achieved at all stages of life. I know because I started baking seriously in my late thirties and am completely self-taught. It's never too late to pursue your passion for baking.

I've been a vendor at my local farmer's market for years, and I've seen bakers of all different ages succeed.

Katie Oehl of Oehl's Bakery started attending farmer's markets when she was in high school.

She came in the summers when she was out of school, and now has a separate bakery on her property. She is married now, but still bakes for our market with help from her mother. This goes to show that getting started young can lead to great success.

Jerica of Lilac Box Bakery, on the other hand, just started baking for our market this year.

She's in her thirties and learned to bake from her grandmother who recently passed away. She says this is her way of remembering her and honoring her memory. She's a prime example that it's never too late to start something new or to pursue a passion.

Frances Baker was in her seventies when she started bringing fried pies to market. She had quite the following and sold out every week.

Baking and going to market was her way of making a little extra money and meeting new people. Her husband has since passed away, but she still comes and visits the other vendors. On her last day, her pies sold out in about two seconds! She proves that age is just a number when it comes to starting a home bakery.

Starting a home bakery doesn't have to be big or make millions. It can just be a way for you to share your love of baking with others while earning a little extra money.
